5 Super League Players Who Could Play NRL
There have been several players who have made the switch to the NRL from the English Super League in recent years with the likes of Sam Burgess, who had a famous head clash with England and Bulldogs James Graham. Burgess was also joined by his twin brothers Tom and George at Souths. Wigan trio Bateman, Sutton and Williams have also joined fellow Englishman Josh Hodgson at Canberra Raiders. Gareth Ellis was named player of the year numerous times at Wests Tigers and Adrian Morley made his mark on opposing players to say the least, whilst at the Roosters.
Here are five more players who could make the switch
Alex Walmsley — The Saint Helens big man would fit well into many NRL sides and the rumours of him going down under are still doing the rounds. A link up with former front-rower Luke Thompson would be a great spot for him and would help Thompson no end. At a towering 6FT 5IN and weighing in at 18st Alex is still only 30 years old the experienced forward has over 200 first grade games in the bag.
Oliver Gildart — Great Britain centre Oliver Gildart looks like a prime candidate to make the switch to the NRL, aged 24 he has amassed 57 tries in 126 first grade games. He was named 2017 Super League young player of the year in 2017 and won the Grand Final in 2016 and 2018. Very skilful with the ball in hand capable of making big breaks exemplified by his great try from 60m out against New Zealand in his England debut, he would fit into the NRL perfectly.
Daryl Clark — In 2015 Clark made the big-money switch from Castleford to Warrington after winning the Man of Steel in 2014. The hooker has an extremely dangerous running game in broken play and is a solid defender. Racking up 267 first grade games, scoring 74 tries in the process the England and Great Britain hookers’ game is ideally suited to making the switch to the NRL.
James Bentley — The young back-rower is almost a carbon copy of John Bateman with them both coming from the famous Bradford Bulls academy which has produced so many world-class players. Coming off the back of a stellar season highlighted by making 69 tackles in the Grand Final victory he is sure to be in the plans of Shaun Wane come time for international rugby at the end of the season.
Harry Newman — Newman won the 2020 young player of the year award despite missing a chunk of the season with a horrific leg break. The young centre is progressing well in his recovery and will be looking the continue his good form for Leeds Rhinos. Harry has a dangerous running game and has the pace and power needed for a modern centre. Rumoured to been looked at my numerous clubs down under he may not be quite yet ready another season or 2 he may well be.
